2009 Tug Hill Challenge

Postby jmolburg » Tue Feb 10, 2009 2:05 pm

I talked with Tom Towne from WFRA today and he's confident that he and his crew will be able to give us GOOD race trails this coming weekend. The cold weather returns on Thursday, along with some predicted snow. They will have two nights of below freezing weather before the race to set trails up.

What trails we will be using, and the order of classes is not set yet. Tom and I will be inspecting the trails Thursday afternoon after all the bad, warm weather has passed. Final decisions on trails will be made then.

I'll bring my laptop and post on this site Thursday evening. So watch for updates.

Maybe Nancy has more insight on actual trail conditions down by the camp, etc.?

I just got home and we have approx. 4" new snow and temps are dropping.

I just returned from riding the Tug Hill trails. Considering the weather we've had - the main trails are in amazing good shape. The smaller loop trails are pretty soft and wet. The groomers are fairly confident that two nights of below freezing will help.

It's snowing here; but that's a mixed blessing. Too much snow and it insulates the wet areas so they don't freeze. WFRA is requesting all dog teams & unnessary snowmobile traffic stay off Dog Leg, Alice's Alley, etc till the trails can harden. The big groomer probably isn't going out til Friday night.

Unfortunately, Winona Way is not usable at this time. Too many wet, nasty spots. That means a short trail again this year for the 8 and maybe 6 dog teams. I plan on conferring with Race Marshall Mark Broughton tomorrow to set the trail and weekend schedule.

Fortunately, we'll have a race, unfortunately it may not be exactly as planned . . but a race anyway.

Any word on what the distances are going to end up being for each class?
